A road accident involving members of Kano State’s delegation to the National Sports Festival in Ogun has claimed at least 22 lives, according to early reports.
The incident occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State as the team was returning from the competition. The vehicle, said to be carrying 35 passengers, plunged from the bridge, leading to the loss of many lives.
A survivor, Ado Salisu Gama, speaking from Kura General Hospital on Saturday morning, confirmed the grim toll. “Twenty-two people have been confirmed dead at Dakatsalle Bridge, just before Kura. The driver is also dead. As I speak with you, one more member just passed away,” he said, visibly shaken.
Those who survived the crash are receiving medical attention at the hospital. The casualties include athletes, journalists, medical staff, and team officials.
The Kano team had recently concluded their participation in the sports festival, returning home with a haul of 29 medals. Further details are expected as authorities continue to assess the situation and identify the victims.
