The newly appointed Prime Minister of Sudan, Kamil Idris, has dissolved the country’s caretaker government, according to a report by state news agency SUNA late on Sunday.
The announcement did not include a timeline for when a new government would be formed — one that would be the first since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Idris was appointed by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s de facto head of state. The RSF, which has been locked in a violent conflict with the army, had earlier stated its intention to establish a parallel government in alliance with sympathetic political groups.
Idris was sworn in on Saturday, becoming Sudan’s first prime minister since the military-led coup in 2021.
In a national address on Sunday, he pledged to maintain political neutrality, declaring that he would keep an equal distance from all parties while focusing on stability, security, and reconstruction efforts across the war-torn nation.
