Interpol Red Notice Issued for Ex-Ghanaian Finance Minister

Interpol has released a “red notice” for Ghana’s previous finance minister, as per website records examined on Friday, due to allegations of abusing his public position for personal benefit.

Ken Ofori-Atta is under scrutiny concerning several prominent contracts, including those linked to Ghana’s oil revenues, electricity provision, ambulance acquisitions, and a contentious national cathedral project that, after spending tens of millions of dollars, has produced little more than a dug-out section of land by construction teams.

The Interpol notice was issued after a formal request from Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which reclassified Ofori-Atta as a wanted individual on Monday following his absence from a scheduled interrogation.

Reports indicate that extradition processes are in progress to bring him back to Ghana, although his precise whereabouts remain unclear since he is said to be seeking medical care abroad.

A red notice is a global call for law enforcement to detain a suspect.

The OSP is investigating alleged wrongdoings that range from flawed procurement practices to financial mismanagement. The new government led by President John Mahama has been actively pursuing former officials to ensure they are held accountable for their time in office.

The attorney general is currently compiling 33 corruption and related criminal cases against former governmental officials.

Ofori-Atta was the finance minister for former president Nana Akufo-Addo for seven years.
