Nigeria’s basketball team D’Tigress have secured a spot in the final of the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket, taking place in Cote d’Ivoire, after defeating Senegal 75-68 in the semi-final match held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Saturday.
This win marks Nigeria’s fifth consecutive appearance in the Women’s Afrobasket final since 2017. D’Tigress advanced to the semi-finals after decisively defeating Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
The matchup against Senegal, Nigeria’s long-time basketball rival, turned out to be a much tougher contest than their earlier game.
The D’Tigress started strong, leading 22-17 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Nigerian team’s momentum waned in the second quarter, allowing Senegal to keep the deficit to six points, with a halftime score of 43-37.
The third quarter was particularly challenging for D’Tigress, who only scored nine points in that period and ended the quarter trailing 58-52. Nevertheless, the team refocused in the final quarter, capitalising on turnovers and making crucial shots to secure a 7-point victory.
D’Tigress will play either Mali or South Sudan in the final on Sunday.
