The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed counterfeit, expired, substandard, and falsified drugs and products worth ₦15 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.
NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the destruction exercise in the state capital.
Represented by the agency’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Martins Iluyomade, Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment — as the lead body and chair of the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods — to protecting public health by ensuring all food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages are safe, high-quality, and fit for human use.
“There is no doubt that drug regulation is central to NAFDAC’s mandate,” she said.
“The products destroyed today include expired, counterfeit, uncontrolled, unregistered, and banned items such as Analgin, Cocodamol, Codeine cough syrup, Tramadol, Oxytocin, and various vaccines. Their estimated street value stands at ₦15 billion.”
Adeyeye noted that destroying these products prevents them from re-entering the Nigerian market.
She also thanked the police, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, NDLEA, NSCDC, and the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria for their collaboration.
She urged stakeholders to educate their families about the dangers of patronising quacks and unauthorised drug dealers.
Speaking on behalf of the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, SK Tijani highlighted the strong collaboration between Customs and NAFDAC in tackling the circulation of fake, expired, and substandard products nationwide.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to play their part in eliminating criminal activities such as the importation and production of such dangerous goods.
