Brazilian starlet Estevao scored his first goal for Chelsea to hand Liverpool a third straight defeat on Saturday, a result that sent Arsenal to the top of the Premier League following their 2-0 win over West Ham.

Liverpool, who had won their opening seven matches in all competitions, endured a disastrous week that leaves manager Arne Slot with much to reflect on during the international break.

Injury-hit Chelsea deserved their dramatic 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, which ended their three-game winless run. Former Liverpool target Moises Caicedo gave the Blues a first-half lead with a powerful strike into the top corner after just 14 minutes.

Liverpool’s record signing Alexander Isak — who joined for £125 million last month — is still seeking his first league goal but set up Cody Gakpo to level the score just after the hour mark. However, Chelsea sealed all three points deep into stoppage time when Estevao slid in at the far post to convert Marc Cucurella’s cross, prompting wild celebrations from manager Enzo Maresca, who was sent off for his exuberance.

The defeat leaves Liverpool one point behind Arsenal, while Chelsea climb to sixth.

In Mikel Arteta’s 300th match in charge, Arsenal cruised past West Ham to strengthen their push for a first Premier League title in 22 years. However, the win was overshadowed by an injury to captain Martin Odegaard, who was forced off before half-time for the third time this season.

Despite the setback, Arsenal’s depth proved decisive. Declan Rice, who joined from West Ham for £105 million in 2023, broke the deadlock by smashing in a rebound after Alphonse Areola had parried Eberechi Eze’s shot. Bukayo Saka sealed the win from the penalty spot on his 200th appearance for the club after Jurrien Timber was fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf.

“We dominated and fully deserved the win,” said Arteta. “To go top after a tough week and with injuries shows our strength.”

At Old Trafford, Manchester United eased the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim with a 2-0 win over Sunderland. Mason Mount opened the scoring with a composed finish from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross, while Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead with his first home goal since a £74 million move from RB Leipzig.

VAR overturned a Sunderland penalty late in the first half due to minimal contact from Sesko on Trai Hume.

Meanwhile, Tottenham demonstrated their new defensive solidity under Thomas Frank by ending Leeds’ year-long unbeaten home run with a 2-1 win at Elland Road. Mohammed Kudus netted his first Spurs goal to secure victory after Noah Okafor had cancelled out Mathys Tel’s opener.

“That was a massive result for us,” said Frank. “Getting three points here shows our progress.”
