South Korea’s captain, Son Heung-min, is on the verge of breaking the record for the most appearances for his country’s men’s national team when they face Brazil on Friday.

The Los Angeles FC forward is set to earn his 137th cap in this high-profile friendly match in Seoul, which serves as preparation for next year’s World Cup in North America. Both South Korea and Brazil have secured their spots for the 2026 finals, marking Son’s fourth appearance in the World Cup at the age of 33.

The former Tottenham captain, who joined Major League Soccer in August, is currently level with ex-defender Hong Myung-bo and former striker Cha Bum-kun at 136 games for his country.

Should he play in the match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, he will surpass Cha and Hong, both of whom played during his earlier career, with Hong now serving as South Korea’s coach. If he does not feature in that match, he will have another opportunity at home against Paraguay on Tuesday, where a special event will be held to honour his milestone.

Son made his debut for the senior national team in December 2010 and has netted 53 goals since then.

In their last encounter at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Brazil defeated South Korea 4-1.
