US President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, as part of renewed efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Although a date has not yet been confirmed, Trump revealed on social media that the meeting would take place in the Hungarian capital. His announcement followed a recent phone conversation with President Putin.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a close ally of Trump, expressed his support for the forthcoming talks.

Residents in Budapest also welcomed the news. György Szirmai described the planned meeting as “a positive development,” adding that Hungary could play an important role “in discussions about the outcome of the war.”

Trump’s announcement came just a day before his scheduled meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been urging the United States to supply weapons capable of striking deeper into Russian territory.

Zelenskyy believes that expanding Ukraine’s military capability would increase pressure on Moscow and encourage Putin to take Trump’s calls for direct peace negotiations more seriously.
