US Vice President JD Vance has defended his recent comments expressing a hope that his wife, Usha Vance, who practises Hinduism, may eventually convert to Catholicism.
When asked about their interfaith marriage and raising their three children at a Turning Point USA event, Vance stated that while he “honestly” wishes his wife would one day be moved by his faith, he fully respects her free will.
Following criticism on social media, Vance doubled down, calling the pushback “anti-Christian bigotry.”

He clarified that while his wife has no immediate plans to convert, his desire for her to eventually share his faith is a natural feeling within an interfaith relationship.
Vance himself converted to Catholicism in 2019 and frequently cites his faith as informing his conservative political views.
Usha Vance was born to Indian immigrant parents and has spoken positively about the values instilled by her Hindu upbringing.
