Two high-ranking officials of the Kenyan sports ministry were apprehended on Wednesday and are expected to face charges for misappropriating 3.8 billion shillings ($29 million) in public funds through fraudulent practices.
An assistant commissioner and an accountant from the department were taken into custody, along with three other individuals, during searches of their homes and offices conducted by anti-corruption agents, who seized significant amounts of cash.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) reported that the operation was carried out under a court order to investigate claims that officials illicitly obtained funds during the financial years 2020–2021 and 2025–2026.
According to the EACC, “The suspects reportedly exploited their trusted positions and authority to misappropriate public funds via collusion and procurement fraud.”
During the raids, officers seized 3.58 million shillings (approximately $1,025) in cash, along with other pertinent evidence. These arrests occurred just a day after the country’s sports minister was called before parliament regarding “allegations of misappropriating billions of shillings in stadium projects and sporting events.”
Kenya is currently engaged in extensive stadium construction and renovation in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which it will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.
