Kenya has reported its second Ebola death following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has also spread to Uganda and Nigeria.
Kenya’s Ministry of Health said on Friday that the latest victim was a 65-year-old woman. She was a close family member of the first confirmed case and had been placed under quarantine. The ministry said she developed symptoms on October 13.
“This loss brings the number of deaths to two among the nine confirmed cases,” the ministry added.

Kenya had not reported any Ebola cases before October 6, when a Kenyan man died after returning from the DRC, where he had been living. The country currently has seven active cases. The ministry said all are receiving treatment at two isolation facilities. It added that all cases belong to “one cluster, with no evidence of community spread”.
On Tuesday, the United States warned its citizens against travelling to Kenya after the country reported its eighth Ebola case. The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in May. Since then, it has reported more than 9,000 cases, according to the supplied report.
Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease. It has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years.
Neighbouring Uganda previously recorded 20 infections and two deaths, with almost all cases linked to travel from the DRC. Uganda was declared Ebola-free in August.
The Ministry of Health mourns the death of a 65-year-old woman who was receiving care for Bundibugyo Ebola and extends heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and community. Seven patients continue to receive care. All nine cases remain within one cluster, with no evidence of community spread.
