The governor of Taraba State, north-eastern Nigeria, Agbu Kefas, has announced that he will join the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 19.
In an interview with reporters on Saturday, the governor officially revealed his intention to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling party.
Kefas stated that his decision to defect is motivated by the future of the people of Taraba.
“I will officially transition from PDP to APC. It is a movement that has to do with the destiny of the Taraba people.”
Kefas is the most recent governor to defect from the PDP to the APC ahead of the 2025 elections. Other governors who have made the switch from the PDP include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
In the 2023 election, Kefas was elected governor of Taraba, receiving 257,926 votes to defeat Muhammad Yahaya of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Emmanuel Bwacha of the APC.
Since 1999, every governor of Taraba has been a member of the PDP.
