Chelsea and England forward Cole Palmer is set to miss three more matches after breaking a toe, head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who had only just resumed training following a two-month layoff with a groin problem, sustained the injury in a domestic accident.

Maresca explained that Palmer fractured the toe after stubbing it on a door during the night, ruling him out of Saturday’s Premier League visit to Burnley, next week’s Champions League meeting with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge, and the league clash with leaders Arsenal the following weekend.

The coach stressed that while the injury is not serious, Palmer will not recover in time to feature in any of the forthcoming fixtures.

Palmer, who netted a brace in Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory over Paris Saint-Germain in July, is expected to play an important role for England at next year’s World Cup.
