Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she will hold bilateral trade discussions with US President Donald Trump and separate talks with Canadian leader Mark Carney in Washington on Friday.

The meetings are scheduled to take place just before the draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the three nations will co-host.

A key topic will be the renegotiation of the USMCA trade pact, which is vital to the Mexican and Canadian economies given that they export roughly 80% and 75% of their goods, respectively, to the US.

While Sheinbaum’s government has so far successfully avoided a general increase in tariffs on Mexican exports by increasing border security and drug arrests, Trump is pushing for terms more favourable to US manufacturing and has threatened further tariffs linked to migration and drug trafficking issues.
