Atletico Madrid has announced the death of club legend Enrique Collar, who captained the team to a league title and three cup successes in the 1960s.

“The red and white family loses a symbol who gave everything to take Atletico Madrid to the pinnacle of national and continental football,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

According to AFP, the left winger scored 105 goals in 470 appearances for Atletico between 1953 and 1969 and captained the side for 10 years in the 1960s, making him the club’s longest-serving skipper.

He scored in Atlético Madrid’s victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the 1960 Copa del Rey final and went on to lift further cup titles in 1961 and 1965.

Under his leadership, Atlético also secured the 1965/66 La Liga crown, breaking Real Madrid’s dominance of the league during that era.

Collar added European success by winning the 1962 European Cup Winners’ Cup and earned 16 international caps for Spain, playing at the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

He brought his playing career to an end in 1970 after spending a final season with Valencia.
