A stakeholder of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Oluwaseyi Akinde, says politicians leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) are doing so because they believe the ADC offers a credible alternative for Nigeria’s future.

Akinde made the comment on Wednesday during an interview on News Central TV’s program, Breakfast Central.

According to him, many politicians originally joined the APC because of its ideological roots but later became disengaged with the party’s direction.

Akinde traced the evolution of the APC to earlier political platforms, including the Action Congress (AC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which attracted politicians influenced by the ideas of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“You saw people like Rauf Aregbesola; many of them were joining, and they were followers of Awolowo,” Akinde said.

“But at some point, they saw that this APC is not going anywhere. It’s a party that is just owned by one man, and that’s why you saw them breaking out.”

Akinde said politicians leaving the APC are now aligning with the ADC, which he described as an alternative platform with a clearer ideological direction.

“They are retracing their steps; they found the ADC as an alternative party that has the ideology to rescue Nigeria,” he said.

“That’s the reason why you see them coming here.”

He added that it was legitimate for politicians to change parties if they believed the country was heading in the wrong direction.

“It’s never too late for anyone who feels that Nigeria is not going on the right path and wants to join the team that wants to rescue this country,” Akinde said.

“And that’s what you see in some of them who have been able to rescue themselves from that party, which they called APC, which is just a cult and is not going anywhere. We’ve seen how governors are being coerced to actually join that party.”
