Uganda Election: Museveni Leads Bobi Wine in Early Results

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni is leading opposition candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, in early results from the presidential election, according to figures released by the electoral commission.

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Uganda, Justice Simon Byabakama, said results had so far been received from 35,491 polling stations, representing 69.95 percent of the country’s 50,739 polling stations.

Byabakama said Uganda has 21,649,067 registered voters, and vote counting was continuing at the national tally centre.

Preliminary results showed Museveni with 6,003,657 votes, representing 74.92 percent of the valid votes counted so far.

Bobi Wine followed with 1,709,474 votes, or 21.33 percent.

Other candidates were trailing far behind. Nathan Nandala Mafabi had 157,111 votes (1.96 percent), Mugisha Gregory Mutuoyera 44,367 votes (0.55 percent), Bulira Frank Kabinga 35,315 votes (0.44 percent), Robert Kasibante 24,564 votes (0.31 percent), Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga 22,232 votes (0.28 percent) and Joseph Mabirizi 16,813 votes (0.21 percent).

The electoral commission said the total number of valid votes counted so far stood at 8,135,133. Invalid votes accounted for 2.47 percent of ballots cast, totalling 202,808, while 27,740 votes were recorded as spoilt.

In total, 8,216,341 votes had been cast at the time of the update, representing a 37.95 percent voter turnout, according to the commission.
