At least two people were killed and 66 others injured on Sunday after an explosion ripped through a steel factory in northern China, with five people still unaccounted for, according to state media.

The blast occurred around 3:00 pm local time at a steel plate plant operated by Baogang United Steel in Baotou, a city in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Xinhua news agency reported.

Local emergency authorities said that as of early evening, two deaths had been confirmed, while search efforts were ongoing for five missing persons. Sixty-six injured victims were taken to the hospital, three of whom were reported to be in critical condition.

Videos circulating on social media showed extensive damage at the facility, including collapsed ceilings, scattered debris and thick smoke rising above the plant. 

Other footage appeared to show a large metal object hurled into the air by the explosion, later seen amid the wreckage of nearby buildings.

Residents several kilometres from the site said the blast shook their homes and shattered windows.

Authorities have said the cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with rescue and recovery operations continuing.
