Tech billionaire Elon Musk has joked about the Republicans’ defeat in US midterm elections, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars to support the party.

Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress, the Senate and House of Representatives, in a major setback for President Donald Trump and his political agenda.

Reacting to the results on Wednesday, Musk joked about his efforts to influence the elections in a post on X.

“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” he wrote, adding a shrug emoji.

Musk reportedly spent about $445 million supporting Republican candidates, making him the largest individual donor in the 2026 election cycle. Much of the money went through his Republican-leaning America PAC and the Republican Senate Leadership Fund.

One of the major setbacks for Republicans came in Texas, where Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican candidate Ken Paxton in the Senate race. Paxton, a close ally of Trump, had received significant financial support from groups backed by Musk.

Speaking at a victory rally in Austin, Talarico criticised the powerful figures and political interests he said his campaign had faced.

“In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths. The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment,” he said.

Talarico’s victory marked a major Democratic breakthrough in Texas, where the party had struggled to win statewide elections for decades.
