Guinea-Bissau’s military junta General Horta N’Tam announced on Wednesday that the country will hold presidential and legislative elections on December 6, 2026.

The Junta leader told the press that “all the conditions for organising free, fair and transparent elections have been met,” according to a decree published by the transitional authorities.

The announcement comes two months after the junta seized power, following a presidential election in November.

The takeover ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who had been seeking a second term, and temporarily suspended the electoral process. N’Tam, a close associate of Embalo, was appointed transitional leader.

The junta has said its intervention was necessary to “avoid a bloodbath between supporters of rival candidates,” asserting that the move was aimed at maintaining stability.

The election timetable follows a visit by an Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) delegation led by Sierra Leonean President and ECOWAS chair Julius Maada Bio and his Senegalese counterpart Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The leaders met with the junta, calling for a “short, structured and transparent transition,” and urged the release of political figures, including opposition leader Domingos Simoes Pereira, who were detained on the day of the coup.
