Chaos broke out on Wednesday outside the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa, Ikeja, after police officers fired teargas to stop a protest. The protest was against the demolition of homes in the Makoko and Iyana-Oworo communities.

Before tensions rose, hundreds of people reportedly gathered peacefully.

Eyewitness also claims that tear gas was used by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) members, forcing demonstrators, employees, and onlookers to flee for their lives.

Witnesses said some people were injured during the incident, but organisers had not given an official number as of press time.

The residents carried placards calling on the government to stop the demolitions and protect affected residents.

Police officers blocked roads leading to the Lagos State House of Assembly around 1:30 p.m. before dispersing the crowd.

One of the residents told reporters that the tear gas was used to scatter the protest.

“The police started firing teargas at us. Many people were injured,” the protester said.

Details later.
