The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked viral social media claims that underage students were registered as voters in Ede North, Osun State.

In a statement released Monday, the commission clarified that while students from YTD Grammar School attempted to register on February 6, officials strictly enforced the law and denied them entry.

INEC emphasised that only Nigerian citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to register under the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.

The commission urged the public to disregard “misleading” Facebook posts as tensions rise ahead of the August 8 governorship election.

The race features incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party facing challenges from the APC’s Bola Oyebamiji and the ADC’s Dr Najeem Salaam.
