The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, appointed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as Deputy Chairman of his National Campaign Council on Thursday.
El-Rufai, who currently faces multiple charges filed by the Nigerian government and the Kaduna State government, has remained in ICPC custody since February.
The former Nigerian Vice-President’s spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, announced the appointments on X alongside a streamlined, “lean” campaign structure designed to reflect the nation’s severe economic realities.

“His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, GCON, has approved the composition of a lean and strategically structured National Campaign Council and Presidential Campaign Management Committee,” Shaibu stated.
He emphasised that the campaign will operate as a disciplined, people-driven organisation rather than a bloated patronage system, adding that “at a time when families are being compelled to do more with less, the campaign must demonstrate the same discipline, prudence and sensitivity it seeks to bring to government.”
Experienced political administrator Kashim Ibrahim-Imam will chair the National Campaign Council, with El-Rufai assisting him in high-level political coordination across the country.
Senator Austin Akobundu will serve as Director-General to manage daily operations, supported by six key directorates led by high-profile figures including veteran journalist Dele Momodu, former lawmaker Dino Melaye, and economists Mohammed Hayatudeen and Kingsley Moghalu.
Former Edo State Governor John Oyegun will chair the Campaign Advisory Council to guide the team’s policy and outreach goals.
