Suspected gunmen abducted four residents of Kakafu community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State during a late-night raid.

The attackers reportedly struck around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, kidnapping a man, a woman and her two daughters. The incident triggered panic as residents fled for safety.

Witnesses said the gunmen fired several shots into the air on arrival to scare villagers before moving through the community unchallenged and taking their victims to an unknown location.

A community source, who asked not to be named, said the assailants did not kill anyone but shot sporadically to create fear before taking the four abductees away.

A local forest guard, also speaking anonymously, said residents remained traumatised, with many fearing a repeat attack.

“People are still in shock. Panic has gripped the community because the assailants are believed to be hiding in nearby villages,” he said.

He added that there were concerns the gunmen could be hiding in nearby villages.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said she had not yet received official details of the incident and would provide an update after verification.

“I am not aware of the incident at the moment. Please, I will get back to you as soon as I obtain the necessary information.”

As of press time, no further statement had been issued.

Kwara State has recorded a string of attacks in recent months involving killings and kidnappings for ransom.

On February 3, suspected terrorists killed dozens of people in communities within the Kaiama area, heightening fears about growing insecurity along the Niger-Kwara axis toward the Kainji forest region.
