Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) will arraign former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, on February 25 on allegations of cybercrime and breach of national security.
This development comes four days after the DSS filed a three-count criminal charge against El-Rufai for allegedly wiretapping the telephone lines of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
El-Rufai courted controversy when he said on Arise TV that someone wiretapped Ribadu’s phone, which allowed him to hear a conversation in which Ribadu was reportedly instructing security operatives to arrest him.Â
He framed the claim as part of his defence against what he described as a politically motivated attempt to detain him. El‑Rufai suggested that information from the tapped communications informed him about the alleged plan to detain him.

According to the DSS, El-Rufai breached the Cybercrimes Prohibition Act, (2024), and the Nigerian Communications Act (2003.), an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024.
The former governor was at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja to address ongoing investigations into alleged corruption during his tenure.
He was also taken into the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday in connection with ongoing investigations. The ICPC did not disclose details of the allegations.
