Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a Commanding Officer and several soldiers.
According to Daily Trust, sources in the community said the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday when the terrorists stormed the area from different directions and launched an assault on the military camp at about 12:30 a.m.
A local source explained that the fighters advanced on the base from multiple fronts before engaging troops stationed there.
Another security source said the insurgents forced the soldiers out of the facility, set several military vehicles on fire and made away with weapons and ammunition.

The source added that although details of the casualties were unclear, the unit’s commanding officer was among those killed.
“I cannot say much about the casualties but it’s very sad that we also lost the CO (commanding officer) here.”
The same base had come under attack last month, but troops successfully repelled the assault and reportedly killed several insurgents.
The defence of the base was widely praised by residents, and the commanding officer received commendations, particularly on social media.
The lawmaker representing Kukawa in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, who had earlier celebrated the troops’ success, described the latest attack as unfortunate, noting that the base was eventually overrun.
The incident comes shortly after another attack by insurgents on a military base in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, where several soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed.
