The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has begun state-level implementation of the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health (NPCSH), starting with a stakeholder engagement in Lagos.

The policy, expected to run for five years, aims to sanitise Nigeria’s cosmetics industry and address growing health concerns linked to toxic substances found in some cosmetic products.

Officials said the initiative would strengthen the regulation of cosmetic production and distribution, improve product labelling and raise public awareness about the health risks associated with unsafe cosmetics.

Representing the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, the Director of the Cosmetics Safety Management Programme at the ministry, Paul Okhakhu, said the government remained committed to strengthening regulations to guide cosmetic production and ensure nationwide compliance.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health’s Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Olawale Poluyi, speaking on behalf of Permanent Secretary Dayo Olajide, stated that Lagos would examine the policy to domesticate and implement it.

According to the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health, manufacturers, consumers, and regulators all share responsibility for the safety of cosmetics.

It is expected to improve regulatory coordination, align Nigeria’s cosmetics industry with global best practices, and reduce health risks posed by dangerous products.
