The Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, John Gabaya, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ernest Agada, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Gabaya said the decision was aimed at strengthening development in the council through closer collaboration with the Nigerian Government, as well as repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gabaya, who is currently serving his second term after being elected on the PDP platform in 2019, is expected to complete his tenure in June.
He is also contesting for the House of Representatives seat for the AMAC/Bwari constituency in the 2027 elections.

According to him, the move followed extensive consultations and prayers, and was taken in line with constitutional provisions guiding political affiliation.
He added that the decision was driven by the need for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Government to accelerate development in the area.
“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity, and development in the Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
“It is for better collaborations with the Federal Government, to ensure long-term council development, and this was followed by extensive consultations with stakeholders.”
Gabaya expressed appreciation to his supporters and political associates who contributed to his emergence as council chairman, describing their support as instrumental to his success.
He also extended goodwill to his former party members in the PDP, stressing that his defection should not be seen as hostility but as a step taken in the interest of broader development goals.
Praying for a peaceful and credible 2027 general election, he expressed confidence that the council would deliver strong support for President Bola Tinubu.
