Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will hold its National Convention this weekend in Abuja, with President Bola Tinubu, members of his cabinet, 32 state governors, and over 8,400 delegates in attendance.
This highly anticipated event will feature the emergence of new party leaders, marking another milestone in the party’s ongoing journey.
According to Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation and Co-Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee for the convention, the gathering is crucial for policy engagement, leadership elections, and a formal transition to a new set of executives.
He emphasised that the convention, under the theme ‘Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,’ reflects the party’s identity and outlines its future direction.
Idris added, “The forthcoming National Convention marks another milestone in our journey, reflecting both the continuity of our values and the renewal of our leadership. It offers an opportunity to highlight the party’s achievements under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, showing how his guiding vision is being transformed into tangible outcomes for Nigerians.”

Former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, Chairman of the APC National Convention Central Coordinating Committee, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a smooth, transparent, and credible convention. He assured that all logistical preparations, including the work of 25 sub-committees, had been completed, ensuring the event would run without disruptions.
Masari also addressed concerns about zoning, noting that the party had followed its federal character arrangements, with all offices zoned accordingly. He stressed that any contestant not following this zonal arrangement could disrupt the process. “We suspect that these kinds of people are interested in causing confusion, and we will not allow that,” Masari asserted.
Despite the assurances, some members, including party chieftain Fubara Dagogo, have raised objections, accusing the party of excluding them from the contest. Dagogo filed a suit, protesting his exclusion from the South-South Zonal Congress held on March 25, despite fulfilling all requirements, including paying the N5.1 million nomination fee. However, Masari dismissed these claims, asserting that the party had not been served with any litigation related to the matter.
As the APC prepares for a weekend of reflection and leadership change, the convention remains a pivotal moment for the party’s unity, growth, and future direction under President Tinubu’s leadership.
