David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Friday held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Peoples Redemption Party as part of ongoing political consultations.

The meeting, held in Abuja, brought together key figures from both parties, signalling growing engagement among opposition parties.

Those present included PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, PRP publicity secretary Muhammed Ishaq, and former APC National Vice Chairman (North), Salihu Lukman.

Baba-Ahmed, who recently took over the PRP leadership, had earlier resigned as political adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima, a move widely seen as a return to active politics.

Although neither party issued an official statement, a source familiar with the discussions while speaking with Punch News said the PRP used the meeting to reaffirm its support for the ADC leadership in its dispute with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The source said the PRP criticised what it described as actions undermining the ADC, warning that such developments could weaken democratic institutions.

“The PRP expressed strong solidarity with the ADC regarding its ongoing dispute with the Independent National Electoral Commission and other government institutions.

“The party unequivocally condemned the assaults and anti-democratic actions being directed at the ADC by certain forces, emphasising that such conduct undermines our democracy and jeopardises the nation’s stability,” the source said.

Mark, in response, appreciated the backing and noted that the PRP had been the only party to publicly support the ADC during the crisis, while expressing hope for continued collaboration.

The talks come as divisions within the ADC deepen, with a separate faction backing INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition from Mark’s leadership.

The group, which addressed a press conference in Abuja, said the move aligns with a Court of Appeal ruling and rejected the leadership claim of Nafiu Bala Gombe.

It also accused former party chairman Ralph Nwosu of attempting to hand over the party structure to individuals it described as outsiders.

The faction, comprising some state chairmen, said it convened a valid National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja where it announced a new leadership structure.
