Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for the immediate resignation of Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over allegations that he engaged in partisan commentary on social media, a claim the electoral chief has strongly denied.

The controversy stems from online allegations that Amupitan maintained a personal X (formerly Twitter) account and interacted with a political post, prompting accusations of bias.

However, through his spokesperson, Adedayo Oketola, Amupitan dismissed the claims as completely false and insisted he has not engaged in political commentary.

In a statement posted on X, Abdullahi said the integrity of the electoral umpire must remain beyond doubt, arguing that even the perception of partisanship undermines public trust in the electoral process.

He further alleged that attempts to deny or erase traces of the purported activity amounted to what he described as an attack on accountability and democratic credibility.

“In a democracy, the umpire must be above suspicion. He must not only be independent, but he must also be seen, beyond any reasonable doubt, to be independent. That is the minimum standard required of anyone entrusted with the sacred duty of conducting free and fair elections,” the statement reads.

“However, more troubling is the desperate attempt to tamper with digital records, to erase evidence of his previous partisanship. This is not a trivial matter. It is a calculated assault on truth and accountability.”

Abdullahi maintained that the electoral chief had failed the standard expected of his office, insisting that neutrality is non-negotiable for anyone overseeing elections.

“The referee cannot be running around in the shirt of one of the teams he’s supposed to officiate in a match. This is why Professor Amupitan must resign. Now,” Abdullahi said.

“Anything less is an insult to the Nigerian people and a dangerous precedent for our democracy.”

He added that the ADC would escalate the matter through petitions to relevant bodies, including professional and international institutions, while also intensifying its public pressure campaign for Amupitan’s removal.
