German club Union Berlin has named Marie-Louise Eta as the new head coach, making her the first female to manage a men’s team in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top football league.
This groundbreaking appointment follows the sacking of Steffen Baumgart on Sunday after a string of disappointing results left the club struggling near the relegation zone.
Eta, 34, who made history as the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga, will now take the reins for the remainder of the season.

“I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task,” Eta said in a statement, expressing her enthusiasm for the opportunity.
Union Berlin’s decision to part ways with Baumgart came after a 3-1 loss to last-placed Heidenheim on Saturday, a defeat that highlighted the team’s struggles.
The club has only secured two victories since Christmas, and they currently sit just seven points above the relegation play-off spot.
As a former player with Turbine Potsdam, Eta enjoyed a successful career, including winning the Champions League in 2010 and securing three Bundesliga titles. She has also committed to taking over Union Berlin’s women’s team in the summer, marking another significant milestone in her coaching career.
While women have managed men’s teams in lower divisions, Eta’s appointment sets a precedent as the first woman to take charge of a top-flight men’s team in a major European league.
