Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai arrived at the Kaduna State High Court on Monday, April 13, as his trial, filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), resumed.

El-Rufai, who is standing trial alongside Amadu Sule, faces multiple charges, including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and granting undue advantage. However, he has consistently denied all allegations and maintained his innocence.

In a video footage by Arise TV, shortly before entering the courtroom, the former governor made comments about the upcoming African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention scheduled for Tuesday, April 14.

He said, “So tomorrow is our convention, right?” El-Rufai asked, to which an associate responded, “Insha Allah (God willing).”

In a separate case before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, also filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), El-Rufai is facing a 10-count charge on alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud involving ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.

His legal challenges have intensified since his return to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12, 2026. Upon arrival, he was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and then transferred to the ICPC.

El-Rufai was later granted temporary release on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial but subsequently returned to custody as proceedings continued. Earlier, the Federal High Court fixed April 14 for his bail hearing, a date that aligned with the ADC national convention, where political stakeholders are expected to gather.

Meanwhile, the ADC sought justice for El-Rufai, described the prosecution as politically motivated, and raised concerns over the timing and nature of the charges
