Ex-Majority Leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently increase efforts to release over 400 residents of the Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Council of Borno State, who are still in captivity after a recent insurgent attack.

The captives, who are mostly women and children, were abducted in March by fighters of Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS), a faction of Boko Haram, during an organised assault that left the community destroyed, including military structures in the area.

Ndume, speaking to reporters in Abuja on Monday, April 13, expressed concern over the ordeal of the abductees and the slow response of the Nigerian Government, noting that the situation demands fast and decisive intervention.

However, the lawmaker acknowledged that the Nigerian Army has reclaimed the Ngoshe community from insurgents and currently controls the area. He stated that residents who escaped now reside in Pulka but are eager to return home, despite the devastation, even if it means living in temporary shelters until their homes are reconstructed.

Furthermore, Ndume encouraged the Nigerian Government to supplement the efforts of the Borno State Government, which had committed N100 million to the immediate reconstruction, resettlement, and rehabilitation of the affected community.
