Saraki Slams Kwara Governor’s Political Witchhunt

Former Senate President of Nigeria, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has vehemently rejected claims of his involvement in the infamous 2018 Offa armed robbery case, which is now being resurrected by the current Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

Saraki, in a statement released on social media, criticised the governor’s recent attempts to link him to the robbery as politically motivated and without merit.

Saraki categorically denied any involvement, saying that he was “inundated with calls from many well-meaning Nigerians” following the governor’s move to initiate criminal liability charges against him. He emphasised that the Offa robbery, which led to the deaths of numerous victims, was orchestrated by certain individuals within Kwara State during the Buhari administration as part of a political strategy to undermine his group and seize power in 2019.

He further pointed to two separate legal advices from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in 2018, both of which cleared him of any involvement. In those reports, the DPP stated there was no evidence linking him to the robbery or to any related criminal activity. Based on these findings, only four individuals were charged and later convicted, a verdict upheld by the appellate court and now awaiting the Supreme Court’s review.

Saraki described the governor’s legal pursuit as a baseless move to discredit him and distract from the rising insecurity in Kwara State.

He noted that, since granting an interview on Channels TV, where he criticised the governor’s inability to handle the state’s security crisis, Abdulrazaq had seemed desperate to deflect attention from his own failures.

Saraki pointed out the tragic loss of over 400 lives to banditry in the state between January 2025 and March 2026 and accused the governor of being fixated on “dirty politics” rather than addressing the security challenges.

In a sharp rebuke, Saraki dismissed the governor’s actions as a “vicious attack” on his reputation, pointing out that the charges were an attempt to embarrass him politically. He warned that this move represented a “huge joke” on the governor, who he claimed was reducing the office of the governor to “the gutter” by pursuing such a flimsy case.

Saraki remained confident that the judiciary would uphold justice, believing the case against him would ultimately collapse. His legal team, he assured, is prepared to face the charges in court, with the full expectation that they would be swiftly dismissed.
