The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), widely regarded as the highest decision-making advisory body within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has endorsed Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The move signals an early consolidation of political direction within the ruling party in Lagos, a state that has long remained a strategic stronghold for the APC. By settling on Hamzat, the council appears to be prioritising continuity, internal cohesion, and administrative experience ahead of what is expected to be a closely watched electoral cycle.
The GAC, which plays a central role in shaping political alignments and guiding leadership decisions within the party, is known for its influence in determining candidates for key positions in the state. Its endorsement of Hamzat, therefore, carries significant weight, effectively positioning him as the frontrunner within the party’s structure well ahead of formal primaries.

Dr Hamzat, who currently serves as deputy governor, has been a longstanding figure in Lagos politics, with a track record in governance and public service. His emergence as the consensus choice suggests a deliberate effort by party stakeholders to avoid internal fragmentation and present a unified front.
While the endorsement does not replace the formal nomination process, it establishes a clear direction for party loyalists and potential aspirants. Political observers note that such early alignment often shapes the dynamics of party primaries and can influence broader electoral calculations.
As preparations for the 2027 election cycle gradually take shape, the GAC’s decision sets the tone for what could become a defining contest in the state’s political landscape.
