Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was made public on Monday following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat declared his intention to run for governor in the presence of key party leaders and members of the State Executive Council.
The meeting, which included prominent figures such as former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and party leaders like Ganiyu Solomon, culminated in a unanimous decision to support Hamzat’s candidacy.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised his deputy, calling him “well-prepared” and “fit” to lead Lagos, citing his extensive experience and a strong working relationship over the past seven years.
Describing Hamzat as a man with “integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support,” Sanwo-Olu expressed his personal honour in receiving the endorsement from his deputy.

“He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level,” said Sanwo-Olu, emphasising Hamzat’s readiness for leadership.
Sanwo-Olu also thanked President Bola Tinubu, who, according to him, played a pivotal role in fostering the strong partnership between him and Hamzat. He highlighted that the endorsement is part of a broader consultative process, underscoring that the decision reflects a united stance within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.
The endorsement marks an early alignment within the APC as the 2027 general elections approach, signalling a significant shift in Lagos’s political landscape. The meeting, characterised as a “warm family meeting,” further solidifies Hamzat’s position as a frontrunner for the governorship race.
This endorsement paves the way for an intense political campaign, with the momentum steadily building as party leaders and government officials rally behind Hamzat’s candidacy for the state’s top office.
