At least 16 people have been killed and four others injured following a collision between a passenger bus and a fuel tanker on Indonesia’s Sumatra island.
The accident occurred on Wednesday in North Musi Rawas Regency, according to a disaster agency official, Hasbi Hasidqi, who said the fatalities included 14 bus passengers and two occupants of the tanker.
Emergency responders said four survivors were taken to the hospital, with three suffering severe burns.
According to Hasidqi, preliminary findings indicate that the crash may have been caused by a tyre burst on the bus, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control before colliding with the tanker.
The impact caused a major fire that burnt both vehicles, with the tanker said to be carrying diesel.
Transport accidents are relatively common in Indonesia, where ageing infrastructure and poorly maintained vehicles continue to pose safety risks across road, rail, and air travel.
The latest incident follows a series of recent accidents, including a train collision in West Java last month that left 16 people dead and dozens injured, as well as another crash in Central Java in which four people, including two children, were killed.
