The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed a former humanitarian affairs minister, Sadiya Farouq, on its wanted list over allegations of corruption.

Farouq, who served under the late President Muhammadu Buhari from 2019 to 2023, is being sought for “Criminal Conspiracy, Abuse of Office, Diversion of Public Funds,” the anti-graft agency announced.

A statement signed by EFCC spokesperson Adele Oyewale said the 52-year-old Zamfara State indigene was last spotted in Maitama, Abuja.

“Her last known address is: EN 008, Okpo River, off Agulu Street, Maitama, Abuja,” the commission said.

The EFCC appealed to the public for assistance.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts should contact any of the commission’s offices across the country, call 08093322644, email [email protected], or report to the nearest police station, the agency said.

A federal high court in Abuja had issued an arrest warrant for Farouq and a former permanent secretary in the ministry, Nura Alkali, on April 16.

The EFCC had applied for the warrant after the two failed to show up for their court arraignment.

The ministry is at the centre of an investigation into an alleged N37 billion fraud. The EFCC has filed a 21-count charge against the defendants, including breach of trust and abuse of office.

According to The Cable, investigators say the defendants misappropriated about $1.3 million and N746.6 million. The funds were meant to be returned to the ministry under a social intervention programme, but were allegedly diverted for personal use.
