The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians against a forged official letter that claims to authorise the transfer of $46 billion to a private empowerment organisation.
In a post on its official X account on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the bank shared an image of the document overlaid with a large red “FAKE CONTENT” stamp and stated: “This content is FAKE. Let the public be guided.”
The circulating letter, which bears the CBN letterhead, the Nigerian coat of arms, and an official-looking seal, is dated August 13, 2026.
It is addressed to “ATUFEG Empowerment and Development Center” at an address listed as No. 1, Famakinwa Street, Yaba.

The document purports to grant full endorsement and authorisation for the release of USD 46,000,000,000 (forty-six billion United States dollars) under a supposed developmental grant, and it instructs that the funds be transferred immediately to the beneficiary’s account.
The letter carries the name and purported signature of CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso and claims the authorisation is “final and binding.”
Central Bank officials did not provide further details in the post beyond labelling the material as fake and urging the public to disregard it.
The warning comes amid ongoing concerns about sophisticated document forgeries that impersonate government institutions to facilitate financial scams.
