Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has recalled working as a taxi driver and took on different jobs in the United States to fund his university education.

The President said on Wednesday that the experience shaped his belief that financial challenges should not prevent young Nigerians from pursuing their academic goals.

In a statement, Tinubu recalled that he had to postpone starting school for several months to save enough money for his education. He later moved to Chicago, where he worked different jobs to pay his tuition, accommodation and living expenses.

He said the experience strengthened his commitment to ensuring every Nigerian child has access to quality education, regardless of their family’s financial background.

Tinubu said education remained a major priority of his Renewed Hope administration, highlighting several reforms targeted at expanding access to learning and improving educational institutions.

Through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the President said the government had provided more than ₦372 billion in loans to cover students’ institutional fees and upkeep. He also disclosed that the government’s technical and vocational education programme had received over 2.8 million applications.

According to him, 38 technical colleges have been rehabilitated, while students in national and selected state technical colleges now benefit from free school fees, accommodation, textbooks and uniforms.

The President also announced a new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which provides for a 40 percent increase in academic staff remuneration. He said the agreement included measures to improve stability in the university system and ensure students complete their programmes on schedule.

“A four-year course must take four years. Our young people deserve to complete their education on time and get on with their lives,” Tinubu said.

In medical education, the President said his administration was investing ₦110 billion to rehabilitate 24 medical schools. He added that annual nursing enrolment rose from 28,000 to 115,000, while medical and dental enrolment rose from 5,000 to 12,000.

Tinubu also said over one million children who were previously out of school had returned to learning. He listed teacher development, improved access to education for girls and a new national curriculum that restores Nigerian History to classrooms among the ongoing reforms.

The President urged Nigerians to explore the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) through its interactive A–Z platform at edu4pbat.ng. He encouraged parents, students and teachers to use the platform to understand available education programmes and support.

Tinubu also called on Nigerians to report challenges affecting education in their communities, saying public feedback would help the government identify and address problems.

He said a child’s circumstances at birth should never limit their ambition, adding that his administration remained committed to expanding educational opportunities.

“Our journey from reform to opportunities and shared prosperity must begin with education,” the President said.
