Manchester United’s Tyler Fletcher has earned a surprise call-up to Scotland’s World Cup squad, replacing injured midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Head coach Steve Clarke chose the 19-year-old midfielder despite omitting him from the initial standby list.

Fletcher, the son of former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher, spent the past week training alongside the senior squad before making his international debut during the second half of Saturday’s 4-1 friendly victory over Curacao.

The decision means Fletcher has jumped ahead of Connor Barron, Lennon Miller, and Andy Irving, who originally occupied the standby positions.

The teenager secured his spot despite playing only 17 minutes of senior football for Manchester United.

Clarke admitted the choice forced him to deliver disappointing news to the other three reserve players but explained that Fletcher’s impressive performance in training and during the Curacao match ultimately drove the decision.

The squad will fly out to the United States on Sunday to continue their tournament preparations.

Scotland will face Bolivia in a final warm-up friendly on June 6 before launching their first World Cup campaign in 28 years.

They will contest their group stage matches against Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in Group C.
