German tennis player Alexander Zverev powered into the French Open semi-finals on Tuesday, easing past Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar to end Joao Fonseca’s scintillating run in the quarter-finals.
As the highest-ranked player remaining in the men’s draw, Zverev halted Jodar’s impressive Roland Garros debut with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 6-3 victory under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The 29-year-old German, a three-time Grand Slam runner-up, advanced to the Paris semi-finals for the fifth time in six years, keeping his quest for a maiden major title firmly on course.
Zverev will next face 20-year-old Czech player Jakub Mensik, who shattered Fonseca’s breakthrough tournament by defeating the 19-year-old Brazilian sensation 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) in the night match.
Their battle marked the youngest Roland Garros men’s quarter-final since 2006.
Though Fonseca previously showcased his vast potential with stunning wins over Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud, he finally ran out of steam against Mensik after a stubborn seven-match-point struggle.

In the women’s draw, Marta Kostyuk won the historic first all-Ukrainian Grand Slam quarter-final by holding off Elina Svitolina 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Kostyuk extended her unbeaten clay-court streak to 17 matches and dedicated the emotional victory to the people of Ukraine following a deadly barrage of Russian drone and missile strikes earlier that day.
She will face Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva on Thursday for a spot in the final after the eighth seed crushed Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-3 in under an hour.
