Premier League champions Arsenal have agreed a £75 million ($101 million) fee with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to multiple British media reports on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation for weeks after reports emerged that he wished to leave St James’ Park for the Emirates Stadium.
Guimaraes scored nine goals and provided eight assists in all competitions for the Magpies last season.
He recently linked up with Newcastle on the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain following a break after Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
Eddie Howe, who resigned as Newcastle manager last week, had previously expressed concern about the prospect of losing his captain.
Arsenal have been relatively quiet in the summer transfer window compared with rivals Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea, who have all made significant signings ahead of the new campaign.
Manager Mikel Arteta has not spoken publicly about his interest in Guimaraes but said last week that the club were “very active” and “very ambitious in what we want to do.”
“We need to increase the competition internally. We need to make sure we identify the things that we don’t have in the team,” Arteta said.
Arsenal open their title defence against Coventry at the Emirates Stadium on August 21.
