United States (US) President Donald Trump has marked his 80th birthday by hosting a major Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event on the White House lawn on Sunday.

The event, dubbed “UFC Freedom 250”, forms part of activities marking the 250th anniversary of American independence and features some of the sport’s biggest stars competing in a specially built arena.

According to organisers, the event is expected to attract thousands of spectators and includes military displays, historical presentations and a fireworks show.

The UFC competition is taking place on the South Lawn of the White House, with fighters entering a giant Octagon cage for a series of bouts.

Trump, who has long been associated with the UFC and its fan base, described the event as a unique celebration.

“This is going to be an event you’re really gonna like,” he said during a meeting with fighters earlier this year.

The White House said the UFC is covering the cost of the event.

However, critics have questioned the timing of the spectacle, citing rising economic pressures and ongoing tensions with Iran.

UFC Chief Content Officer Craig Borsari defended the event, saying it was intended to celebrate the country and showcase athletes rather than mix sports with politics.

The event has also drawn attention because it coincides with Trump’s milestone birthday, making it one of the most unusual presidential birthday celebrations in modern US history.

Meanwhile, discussions over a possible agreement between the United States and Iran have continued, although no breakthrough had been announced as of Sunday.

The celebrations come just months after Trump oversaw a large military parade in Washington as part of activities commemorating the 250th anniversary of the US Army.
