A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned a Nigerian High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement issued on Friday night, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Imi Ememobong, described the order as a threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, adding that they were awaiting the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment.

The statement followed Friday’s ruling by a High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which ordered INEC to deregister the NDC and directed that the case be reheard. The NDC has already indicated it will appeal the decision.

“While we await the Certified True Copy of the judgment, we express our profound condemnation of the implications of the court order, which further constricts the democratic space in our country,” Ememobong said.

He argued that the ruling was particularly troubling because Nigerians had already invested time and resources in contesting elective positions under the NDC platform.

“This order is not only an asphyxiation of multiparty democracy in Nigeria but also an economic crime against Nigerians who invested in the party,” he said.

Ememobong alleged that although the court delivered the ruling, it aligned with what he described as the political strategy of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Nigerian Government ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The absurdities that have occurred under the APC Federal Government clearly demonstrate its disdain for fair political competition, which is most unfortunate.”

The PDP faction also urged the NDC leadership to challenge the court’s decision through legal means.

Ememobong further called on the Nigerian Government to take steps to ease political tensions in the country.

“The Federal Government must take practical steps to reduce the political temperature of the country in the interest of peace, stability, and the preservation of democracy,” he added.
