The Osun State Police Command has invited Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, over a viral video in which he was allegedly heard calling for the killing of Accord Party members ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The video, which has generated outrage on social media, allegedly showed Fadahunsi telling supporters of the All Progressives Congress to kill and hunt members of the rival Accord Party in the Ijesa axis.
The command described the video as a serious concern and said it would not tolerate statements or conduct capable of inciting violence, regardless of the status of the person involved.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that Fadahunsi had been invited to explain the circumstances surrounding the comments.
Ojelabi said the senator was not protected by any immunity from police invitation, noting that the police routinely invite individuals, regardless of their status, when clarification is required. He added that Fadahunsi would be expected to honour the invitation.
“He is a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are not talking about immunity here. Even people not up to his status, we normally write invitation letters to them.”
“If they honour it, fine; if they don’t, then we go after them.”
The invitation letter, dated August 11, 2026, was signed by the Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Samuel Erale Etaifo, and directed Fadahunsi to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo at 11 am on Wednesday.
The police said the invitation was based on information suggesting that statements attributed to the senator during an APC campaign in Ilesa were threatening, inciting and intimidating.
Fadahunsi, however, denied calling for the killing of Accord members, describing the allegation as a deliberate misrepresentation of his comments.
He claimed the video had been edited to distort his remarks, saying he was responding to what he described as the continued killing of APC members by suspected Accord supporters in Ilesa.
The senator explained that what he said was that the APC would retaliate if alleged attacks on its members continued.
Fadahunsi condemned the killing of people regardless of political affiliation and said the APC would not remain passive if its members continued to be attacked.
“It is unacceptable for human beings to kill fellow human beings the way our members are allegedly being killed in Ilesa. All those being killed are Nigerians and, indeed, sons and daughters of the same communities,” he said.
Following the release of the video, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke called for Fadahunsi’s arrest and investigation, accusing him of inciting violence and genocide against Accord Party members.
Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the Accord platform, described the matter as a national security concern requiring the attention of the Nigerian Government and the National Security Adviser.
“This is now beyond politics. This is now a national security threat that requires the attention of Mr. President through the office of the National Security Adviser.”
The governor also said the Inspector-General of Police had confirmed the video and assured him that action would be taken against the senator.
Adeleke has repeatedly accused the APC of using thugs to attack and kill his supporters, allegations the party has rejected.
Meanwhile, Etaifo said the invitation was not intended to intimidate Fadahunsi but was part of proactive measures to prevent the escalation of tension ahead of the election.
In a statement issued by Ojelabi on Wednesday, the commissioner said the police were concerned about any statement, action or conduct capable of threatening public peace or the security of the state.
He said inviting Fadahunsi was aimed at obtaining clarification and fostering understanding in the interest of peace and security.
Etaifo stressed that the police remained committed to neutrality, professionalism and the protection of democratic values, adding that inflammatory rhetoric would not be tolerated ahead of the poll.
He urged political leaders, their supporters and members of the public to exercise restraint, remain law-abiding and channel grievances through lawful means.
The police commissioner also called on all political actors to avoid actions capable of heightening tension or undermining public confidence in the security arrangements for Saturday’s election.
“While reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to neutrality, professionalism, and the protection of democratic values, CP Etaifo emphasised that the Police will not tolerate any act, utterance, or conduct capable of inciting violence, disrupting public peace, or threatening the security of the state.
“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police has invited Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi to provide clarification on the statement and to foster mutual understanding in the interest of peace and security.
“CP Etaifo reiterated that the invitation should not be misconstrued as an act of intimidation, but rather as part of proactive measures aimed at preventing the escalation of tensions and ensuring a peaceful, free, fair, and credible governorship election in Osun State.
“The Police Commissioner further called on all political actors, their supporters, and members of the public to remain law-abiding, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and channel their grievances through lawful means, “the statement concluded.
