Gunmen have killed two people, injured another and set several houses ablaze in fresh attacks on Berom communities in Plateau State.
The attacks reportedly occurred on Tuesday night in at least four locations, including Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village in Bachi District, Dorong and Jol Village.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association confirmed the attacks in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.
The association said Bulus Mwagwong, popularly known as Dikko, was killed when gunmen attacked Gwa-Wereng Rim, while his cousin, Yakubu, sustained serious injuries.
It added that 47-year-old Stephen Dachollom Kaze was killed by suspected attackers at Kyeng Village, Bachi District, at about 8:30 p.m.
A resident, Lyop Gabriel, said the attack on Gwa-Wereng Rim occurred at about 9:30 p.m., when gunmen invaded the community and opened fire on residents.
The BYM said another attack was recorded in Dorong, where houses were reportedly set ablaze, destroying property and forcing residents to flee.
At Jol Village, the association said armed attackers exchanged gunfire with local vigilantes, further heightening tension in the area.
The National President of BYM, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, also confirmed the killings and condemned the attacks, describing them as a serious threat to the safety and livelihoods of rural communities.
The association expressed concern over the increasing frequency of attacks on communities, particularly farmers and other residents who depend on their farmlands for their livelihoods.
It called on security agencies to strengthen their presence in vulnerable communities, intensify surveillance and track down those responsible for the attacks.
The group also urged the authorities to arrest and prosecute those behind the killings and destruction.
It appealed to the Plateau State Government and other relevant authorities to provide immediate assistance to affected families, particularly those who lost loved ones, homes and other property.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant, peaceful and united, while calling for urgent security measures to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in the affected communities.
