Defending champion Jannik Sinner powered into the Wimbledon fourth round on Friday after delivering a ruthless 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Jenson Brooksby.

The world number one maintained his flawless record against lower-ranked players at Grand Slams by dominating the world number 81 on Court One.

With this win, the 24-year-old Italian secured his fifth appearance in the Wimbledon last 16, matching Nicola Pietrangeli’s national record for the most fourth-round appearances at the tournament.

Sinner will now face Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, the world number 151, for a place in the quarter-finals.

The defending champion acknowledged that he needs to improve further to make a deep run in the tournament, though he expressed satisfaction with his steady progress.

The victory offers a welcome confidence boost for the top seed, who looked under-prepared in his opening rounds after skipping his usual grass-court warm-up events.

He previously survived a gruelling five-set opener against Miomir Kecmanovic and fought through two tight tie-breaks against Nuno Borges.

“I’m trying to improve every day. A small step forward today. Trying to get better if I want to go far in this tournament.”
— Jannik Sinner, World No. 1

Last year, Sinner famously ended Carlos Alcaraz’s two-year reign to lift the Wimbledon trophy.

However, he has endured a challenging season so far, failing to reach a Grand Slam final and suffering a shock second-round exit at the French Open against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Determined to avoid another upset on Friday, Sinner showed rare emotion late in the match, breaking his usually calm demeanour to pump up the crowd and demand more noise after winning a critical point.

This victory also makes him the youngest man to reach the Wimbledon fourth round in five consecutive years since Pete Sampras in the 1990s.
