President Bola Tinubu has announced the next steps his government will take following the rescue of children and teachers abducted from Oriire community in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, after 56 days in captivity.

In a statement on Friday, Tinubu said his government would secure justice for the victims and for the family of a teacher murdered by the kidnappers.

“My government will get justice for these children and their teachers and for the family of Mr Oyedokun, who the terrorists gruesomely murdered,” Tinubu said.

He also directed emergency agencies to work with the Oyo State Government to provide all necessary medical and relief support to the rescued children and teachers.

The President praised security forces, including the military, the Department of State Services and the police, for working round the clock to secure the release of the abductees without any collateral damage.

Eight of the kidnappers were arrested during the operation, while several others were neutralised, according to the statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

“I am profoundly happy that our security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire, Ogbomoso in Oyo State today after a military, police and intelligence-driven operation that neutralised some of the terrorists that perpetrated the evil act and the arrest of eight of them,” Tinubu said.

The President regretted the anguish experienced by the children, their teachers, families and the entire nation since the abduction occurred on May 15.

He commended the Oyo State Government for its cooperation with federal authorities and charged it to ensure adequate security around schools across the state.

“This successful military operation has ended the siege and standoff of over 50 days and has brought relief to the entire nation and the affected families in particular,” he said.

The pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15 when armed terrorists attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and two other schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Alawusa communities, killing two teachers. They were rescued on Friday following a coordinated operation by security agencies in the Orire Local Government Area.
